4-core cables combine excitation and sense lines (sensing is handled at the indicator), which is fine for most short-run installations. 6-core cables have dedicated sense wires that compensate for voltage drop over long distances—essential when the junction box is 30 meters or more from the load cell.
You can, but it’s not ideal. Indoor bench scales usually only need PVC-jacketed wire, which is cheaper and more flexible. Weighbridges and outdoor applications should use PUR or polyethylene jackets to handle temperature swings, UV exposure, and moisture. It’s a small price increase for much longer service life.
If there’s any AC power wiring, motor drives, or radio transmitters nearby, you need shielded cable. Unshielded wire acts like an antenna—it picks up electromagnetic interference that makes the weight reading drift. Even in a quiet environment, shielding is cheap insurance against intermittent faults.
